What is lurking in the shadows……

The lights are on, but nobody is home……and that is okay

Gosh it gets dark early now. Winter is coming and our hours of daylight are getting fewer and fewer. By 6:00 p.m. we are blanketed in darkness and if you are still at work or out of town, chances are that your home is dark as well.

The other evening I drove home and paid specific attention to how dark it was in our City. Houses completely dark – not one light on.

We have to get serious about protecting ourselves from crime and that begins with something as simple as lighting. Today….go buy yourself TWO new exterior bulbs – one for your front door and one for your back door.

Next step: TURN THEM ON WHEN IT IS DARK

Energy Efficient bulbs use a minimum of power so if you know that you won’t be returning until after dark, perhaps just leave the light on. (Here is a handy guide to assist you in purchasing the best light = highest lumen for your front door).

I know that this goes against everything we have been taught regarding conservation of power, but we have to be more thoughtful about the consequences of shrouding ourselves in darkness.

Why make it easier for criminals?

Next budget item on my list is a light timer for my exterior lights.
